Margate Park - COVID-19

Date: 03/13/2020 - 04/11/2020 Time: 1:30 pm — 4:30 pm
Location: Margate Park

4921 N Marine Dr
Chicago, IL 60640

Normally every Saturday from 1:30pm - 4:30pm, VballNetwork runs its open play at Margate Park. Three full hours of play for $10. We limit the number of players to 36 to ensure that you're sitting out for no more than one game at a time. 36 players, 6 teams, 2 courts, and 1 place for the action - Margate Park with VballNetwork!

VBN’s been discussing what the appropriate action to take would be amidst the headlines/news/facts that we’ve all been bombarded with these last few weeks, and more hyper-focused with this current week. We decided today that we will suspend our play this Saturday in an effort to do our very small part in the larger effort of social distancing and suppression of the spread of COVID-19.

We were careful not to make a decision driven by fear or hysteria, but rather a decision driven by facts and our sense of what is right. We’re all healthy, we’re all young(-ish) :), and the virus likely won’t play a major impact in our own personal overall health. However, we’re giving thought to your family, friends, and general community who could be at risk if you were to become a vector for this virus at an event we thought could go on regardless. We’re all sweating, we’re all high-fiving, and sometimes the competitive environment can make us easily forget for a moment how we should be careful about ourselves and one another.

We'll continue to update our players via email and Facebook as to when we will resume play, and we will look at it on an ongoing, weekly basis. We look forward to Saturday play as much as you do, and we hope you don’t sour too much over this news, but rather appreciate the care that went into this decision.

Thank you in advance for your understanding.

We’re Vball-f’n-Network, and with great responsibility comes great power. Also, I read a very touching and insightful piece from a (hope I get this right) Rabbi Yosef Kanefsky on the topic of social distancing. It’s a good (and different) perspective on what’s in front of us today. It was enough that I thought to share it with you. So here you go…

”One of the brand new terms that has entered our daily conversation is “social distancing.” It is shorthand, as we know very well, for the practical physical precautions that we all need to and must take in order to protect ourselves and others. I’d humbly suggest though, that we use the term itself sparingly, if at all. Language is a powerful shaper of thinking. And the very last thing we need right now is a mindset of mutual distancing. We actually need to be thinking in the exact opposite way. Every hand that we don’t shake must become a phone call that we place. Every embrace that we avoid must become a verbal expression of warmth and concern. Every inch and foot that we physically place between ourselves and another must become a thought as to how we might be of help to that other, should the need arise. It is obvious that “distancing,” if misplaced or misunderstood, will take its toll not only upon our community’s strength and resiliency, but upon the very integrity and meaning of our spiritual commitment. Let’s stay safe. And let’s draw one another closer in a way that we’ve never done before.”
